This boom is no coincidence. The demand for a superior product has displaced traditional commercial and "torrefacto" coffee. Today, neighborhoods like Gràcia, Poblenou, Sant Antoni, or Eixample are full of local micro-roasters and independent coffee shops. This growth is driven both by a local public with an increasingly educated palate, and by the influx of international talent and digital nomads looking for workspaces with high-quality coffee, a WiFi connection, and a good atmosphere.

Specialty coffee is grown in ideal microclimates, hand-picked at optimal ripeness, and roasted specifically to highlight its natural notes. To qualify, it must score above 80 points in professional cuppings by the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA). This process also ensures a much more transparent and fair deal for farmers at origin compared to commercial coffee.
The directory is updated when we visit new specialty coffee shops in Barcelona and decide whether to include them. There is no fixed update schedule. We also update when we detect an error or receive suggestions for changes or new cafes. To propose one, get in touch.

The directory calculates in real time whether venues are open or closed using Barcelona local time. If you see a cafe in grey, it means it is currently closed. Come back during its usual opening hours and you will see it marked in green.
We evaluate four criteria: (1) own roastery or direct relationship with verified roasters; (2) coffees scoring 80+ SCA points on the regular menu; (3) honest service, with staff who know what they serve; (4) a cafe we would return to for the coffee itself. A cafe must meet at least three of the four criteria to enter the directory.
In 2026, the usual prices are: espresso between €2.80 and €3.80, filter coffee between €4.20 and €5.50, and latte between €3.50 and €4.50. Cafes with very exclusive lots may charge a bit more.
The V60 is a manual pour-over brewing method. It uses a cone-shaped filter at a 60-degree angle, hot water between 90°C and 96°C poured in slow circles, and a total extraction time of 2:30 to 3:30 minutes. It is the most used method in Barcelona specialty coffee shops.
